Loving the Emergency Department Renovations
Much is a buzz with all the wonderful changes that are rapidly progressing in the Memorial Hospital emergency department! The larger waiting room area has ample seating that includes a small table and chairs for children with plenty of reading material and coloring supplies available. The consistency of the wall colors and décor that flows through the department has stirred up comments such as “calming,” “relaxing,” and “soothing.”
While working in the department one night, I decided to invite some of my co-workers to share their perspectives of the renovations that have thus far taken place in the emergency room. One of my colleagues stated that the rooms are service friendly with more storage,” pertaining to the previously renovated rooms. Another colleague mentioned that the “treatment supplies are centrally located and easily accessible for staff.” Staff members are also anticipating the arrival and use of the medication administration system which will provide additional safe medication administration practice.
Other staff members in the department acknowledge that the increase in privacy with the new patient rooms is above and beyond expectations. On providing additional privacy and security, the new architectural design of the emergency department limits the flow of non essential traffic through the department. Avoiding non-essential traffic through the department creates a quieter environment and limits additional ailments being spread through the department.
Some additional items that are accessorizing the new rooms to improve comfort and communication are dry erase boards and garment hooks. The width of the hallways makes for easier transporting of patients whether by wheelchair or by a stretcher. Overall, thus far, the layout has been positive for staff and we have received many positive comments from the community.
As the remaining rooms are being renovated, or are awaiting their own renovation, the Memorial HealthCare Systems employees along with the emergency department staff will strive to provide quality care, communication, privacy, and satisfaction to our patients and their families throughout the remaining renovation process and thereafter.
