Memorial Hospital Home Health Care: A History Lesson
Posted by MHCS Marketing Team on Wed, Jun 23, 2010
The history of home health care stems back to the late 1800s, when public health nurses made visits to patients in their own homes to educate and provide treatment as part of community outreach programs.
Lillian Wald is given credit as starting public health nursing in New York City, where her mission was to always put the patient first. Throughout her career, she never lost sight of the fact that the health of the community affected the health of the individual. By the time Wald retired in 1933, her staff had grown to 265 nurses who made 550,000 home visits annually to 100,000 patients, and remember this was during the early 1900s.
Today, more than 7 million people receive some type of home health care.
